Planar shape recognition by shape morphing
نویسندگان
چکیده
A novel method based on shape morphing is proposed for 2D shape recognition. In this framework, the shape of objects is described by using their contour. Shape recognition involves a morph between the contours of the objects being compared. The morph is quanti"ed by using a physics-based formulation. This quanti"cation is used as a dissimilarity measure to "nd the reference shape most similar to the input. The dissimilarity measure is shown to have the properties of a metric as well as invariance to Euclidean transformations. The recognition paradigm is applicable to both convex and non-convex shapes. Moreover, the applicability of the method is not constrained to closed shapes. Based on the metric properties of the dissimilarity method, a search strategy is described that obviates an exhaustive search of the template database during recognition experiments. Experimental results on the recognition of various types of shapes are presented. ( 2000 Pattern Recognition Society. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A Metamorphosis-Based Shape Recognition Method
We present a framework for matching and recognition of planar shapes based on a method from computer graphics based animation, called \shape metamorphosis." In our approach, the \degree of morphing" between two shapes is employed as a dissimilarity measure. A physics-based energy minimization approach is used for optimally computing the \degree of morphing." This measure is shown to have metric...
متن کاملIntrinsic Morphing of Compatible Triangulations
Two planar triangulations with a correspondence between two vertex sets are compatible (isomorphic) if they are topologically equivalent. This work presents a simple and robust method for morphing two compatible planar triangulations with identical convex boundaries that locally preserves the intrinsic geometric properties of triangles throughout the morph. The method is based on the barycentri...

1 Three-dimensional shape and two-dimensional surface reeectance contributions to face recognition: Abstract We measured the three-dimensional shape and two-dimensional surface reeectance contributions to human recognition of faces across viewpoint. We rst divided laser scans of human heads into their two-and three-dimensional components. Next, we created shape-normalized faces by morphing the ...
متن کاملRecognition of 2D shapes through contour metamorphosis
A novel method for 2D shape recognition is proposed. The method employs as a dissimilarity measure the degree of morphing between a test shape and a reference shape. A physics-based approach substantiates the degree of morphing as a deformation energy and casts the problem as an energy minimization problem. The method operates upon key segmen-tation points that are provided by an appropriate se...
متن کاملThe relative weight of shape and non-rigid motion cues in object perception: a model of the parameters underlying dynamic object discrimination.
Shape and motion are two dominant cues for object recognition, but it can be difficult to investigate their relative quantitative contribution to the recognition process. In the present study, we combined shape and non-rigid motion morphing to investigate the relative contributions of both types of cues to the discrimination of dynamic objects. In Experiment 1, we validated a novel parameter-ba...
